One of the more recent advances, and quite commonly prescribed treatments for soft tissue injuries, is a treatment methodology called “Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization” or IASTM. The basic premise behind this treatment is to use specially formed tools to “scrape” fibrotic tissue that can form in soft tissue injuries. There are numerous different forms of IASTM, the most common being called ” Graston’s,”, and , the form we are presently using at Rehab Plus called “ASTYM”. There are mandatory educational courses that go into being a certified IASTM provider, and the treatment is best administered by a licensed health care professional. Some of the injuries that seem to respond best to IASTM are Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis, and Lateral Epicondylitis (“tennis elbow”). We have found IASTM to be a great resource for our therapists to have in their “toolbox”.
